WiFi Automation Drastically Changed Our WiFi

When asked why he started working with Wyebot, North Attleborough Director of Technology Kyle Kirshenbaum said that he was offered a demo unit to try for free, no strings attached. After setting up the trial, the amount of information received drastically changed WiFi in his district.

“Our IT team is great, but not everyone is a WiFi expert. Without the right information, knowing where to begin solving problems is difficult. The AI-driven WiFi Automation software showed us exactly where we needed to make adjustments. It had an immediate impact and we’re continuing to make improvements.”

Internal and External Problems Identified

The Wireless Intelligence Platform™ (WIP) not only alerts Kirshenbaum’s team to issues, but identifies the root cause as well. This means that all IT personnel know if the problem lies with a school’s devices or infrastructure, or if the culprit is an external source. WIP also suggests resolutions. This clarity and visibility simplifies problem solving and helps reduce IT stress.

“Now we can understand why these problems are happening,” Kirshenbaum shared. “That’s huge. We didn’t have that before. We can also always jump on a support call with Wyebot. If we ever need extra help, it’s good to know it’s there.”

Historical Traces Keep Us Informed

Kirshenbaum’s favorite feature is WIP’s historical traces. “Having a record of what the problems are, how long they lasted, the specific issues, that’s great. Often we’ll get a call at two o’clock that the WiFi was bad at nine…since we have to be able to see the problem to know how to resolve it, that’s challenging. With WIP, we have knowledge of the problem and facts around the problem, no matter when the issue occurred.”

High Performing, Problem Free WiFi Networks

Optimized, future-proofed, reliable WiFi networks are a way of life for many schools. Ask us about a free trial or demo and bring WIP (E-Rate eligible) to your school today.

The Wyebot Solution

A state agency in Kansas serving around 60 school districts took advantage of Wyebot’s free trial to see how the Wireless Intelligence Platform™ (WIP) could better help it serve its schools.

Their impression?

“Having WIP is like having somebody monitoring the network all the time. It identified underlying issues right away, some we didn’t know about and some we knew existed but couldn’t pinpoint the root cause,” the agency’s technology director shared. “It gave us answers and validated our concerns. With WIP, you’ve got the proof you need that something’s wrong, and now you can resolve it.”

Real World Problems Solved

The agency switched to a new vendor for their WiFi infrastructure, replacing equipment in their district office and seven learning centers. Unfortunately, the new infrastructure wasn’t configured for high density networks – an important point that hadn’t been made clear – and the agency had immediate issues with WiFi connectivity.

There was no direct support with the vendor, but WIP was on hand.

The solution identified the issues, problems with multicast traffic, immediately. The technology director shared WIP’s insights with the vendor and was then told how to keep multicast from broadcasting.

“The vendor agnostic design is very helpful. We need that visibility. It’s good to have WIP to compare with the vendor software reports. It’s an all-in-one troubleshooting tool for us.”

Good Remote Support to Make Sure Everything is Working

The agency doesn’t only use WIP in its own buildings, but benefits when its schools also install the solution. Particularly, the agency enjoys the remote troubleshooting aspect.

The technology director said, “If you need insight into a school’s network, it’s ideal for that situation. With remote access, we have a place to start before we even have to drive out to the school. We have insight, access, and network information, and it saves money in the long run because we don’t have to travel as often.”

The Favorite Feature: Automatic Alerts

The technology director’s favorite WIP feature is the solution’s automatic alerts. Specifically, the director called out:

  • The ability to set up thresholds
  • The automatic alerts that notify IT whenever there is an issue
  • The prebuilt, easy to use design
  • The deeper insight into connectivity issues that comes from WIP being on the network

If you want to bring WIP to your school or school district, ask us about a free demo and trial. Also be sure to check out the other ways that WIP is making a difference for educators.

Christopher McEndarfer, IT Manager for Argosy Collegiate Charter School, had a problem. Students and teachers at Argosy were reporting a lot of connectivity issues with the WiFi network. He studied the logs, ran updates, and had an outside engineer visit the school to study the network, but the engineer reported that everything looked good. Knowing this wasn’t the case – clients were losing the network altogether at times – McEndarfer remembered an email he’d received about a vendor agnostic solution, Wyebot’s Wireless Intelligence Platform™ (WIP). Now was the time to take advantage of WIP’s free trial.

The Wyebot Solution

As a vendor agnostic solution, WIP provided an independent third party view of the entire network ecosystem. By analyzing network traffic at the radio frequency (RF) level, WIP identified the issue. While the school’s APs showed that they were not broadcasting on a certain frequency band, this was not the case. McEndarfer took WIP’s insights and spoke with a Wyebot engineer who suggested a resolution – updating the firmware on the AP to an early access version. The connectivity problems stopped immediately.

“WIP was the only thing that helped,” McEndarfer shared. “The fact that it solved this problem alone makes it worth the investment. Listening to the radio waves was the key. No other vendor comes in and scans the radio waves. Only WIP.”

WIP is the only vendor agnostic, three radio solution on the market.

The Wyebot Benefit

McEndarfer continues to use WIP to monitor the WiFi network and pinpoint the root cause of issues. When connectivity issues were again reported. WIP alerted McEndarfer that the problem was once again the APs broadcasting on a lower frequency band. The solution identified the exact 3 APs that were causing the issue, making problem solving faster and easier.

“It’s great to have a solution that I don’t have to set up myself. There’s nothing for me to script. It has the full feature set and it’s always running, always working. I don’t have to worry about it and it takes a lot off my plate.”

Why not Wyebot?

McEndarfer’s final thoughts are that everyone should adopt WIP and take advantage of its leasing option. “The lease is huge because as soon as there’s something new, Wyebot sends me an updated sensor model. The question really is, ‘Why not Wyebot?’ It’s a great product that solves problems that nothing else can.”

The Need

A Pre-K through Grade 8 school district was sold on Wyebot’s Wireless Intelligence Platform™ (WIP) as soon as they had a demo. “We’ve always been told that our wireless controller should give us everything we need to optimize the WiFi network, but that isn’t always true,” the district’s assistant IT director shared.

WIP gave greater network visibility and provided a client-view of network performance. “It was exactly what we needed.”

Problems Solved

The schools in the district were having a few recurring problems, including:

  • Trouble with roaming clients
  • Reports of spotty internet connectivity

At one of the schools, internet connections would drop at random times. The wireless controllers the school used reported that everything was fine. WIP, however, provided different information and helped resolve the issue.

“When we demoed the sensor, it found that some of our APs were under-powered and weren’t channeling correctly. There were mismatched configurations between APs in the same building. We learned a lot about our APs from WIP.”

With WIP’s insights, the assistant director knew how to better manage the network because he had better visibility into network behavior. WIP helped him to mitigate and resolve the roaming and connectivity issues, improving teacher and student network experience.

How WIP Stands Out from Other Solutions

Besides visibility, are there other ways WIP stands out from other solutions in the market?

“The ability to customize tests and the amount of tests available really stand out to me. Plus, the fact that you can act as a client, and the built-in PCAP feature.”

Another stand-out feature? The collaboration between Wyebot and the school. “I can send my own ideas to them and they are excited to hear from me. They want a conversation,” the assistant director shared. 50% of WIP’s feature updates have come from customer requests!

The School’s Favorite WIP Features

“It’s the dashboard. The information you get from it is very insightful. I also love that I can set it [WIP] up and forget about it, knowing it’s watching everything and will give me needed information when something happens. WIP has saved us from quite a few headaches. Our other solutions didn’t paint the same picture. The information we got from them didn’t help us fully resolve our problems.”

Wyebot is glad to support all of the teachers, students, and staff at the district’s schools!

The Challenge

A K-12 school in Illinois purchased Smart Boards with desktop application software. Soon after installing the boards, they noticed that the smart boards connected perfectly in one area of the school, but continued disconnecting in another area of the building.

The Solution

The school utilized Wyebot’s Wireless Intelligence Platform (WIP), leveraging AI technology to both identify the issue in detail and determine how to correct it.

The school’s Field Engineer shared that WIP, “has been extremely helpful because I can’t be in two places at once. If an issue happens in one location while I’m at the other, I can easily access the dashboard, do various testing, and get informative facts as to what is happening. It’s very convenient to be able to look at what is happening at another school from WIP’s dashboard.”

The School’s Favorite WIP Features

“It’s an amazing solution that proactively identifies problems, clearly depicts what is going on, and offers a resolution to the problem. I have been able to monitor and identify any disruptions or critical errors that may occur.”

The Challenge

After a K-12 school in Arizona installed new wireless access points, they experienced a number of inefficiencies with their upgraded network. After monitoring the environment, they discovered that their access points were changing channels.

The school discussed the issue with their AP vendor. The vendor suspected that the issue’s root cause lay with the fact that the school is located near an airport. While environmental factors such as that can cause WiFi problems, more information was needed to determine whether location or another element was the root cause of this issue.

The Solution

The school was able to utilize Wyebot’s Wireless Intelligence Platform (WIP) to get the answers it needed. With WIP’s wireless trace capability, the school was able to collect and analyze real-time and historical packet captures and share them with the AP vendor. After reviewing the data, the vendor determined that there was a software bug causing the school’s issues.

The Benefits of WIP

While the school was initially interested in the elevated network visibility offered by WIP, which is what helped resolve their AP problem, they’ve noticed further benefits since using the platform.

“Since implementation, we’ve been more precise and thorough in our ticket resolutions. We’re seeing faster troubleshooting and improved overall network performance. We like that the sensor can sit plugged into the network without any active monitoring, yet we can still go back to a specific time to explore a reported network event.”

The Highlights
  • New computers continued to connect to a school’s 2.4GHz channel
  • The AI-powered WIP helped prove that the problem was with the chromebooks and not the school’s network
  • With WIP, IT can instantly see if a root cause is internal or external
  • Insights are delivered in real-time and saved for historical review

New computers joined the wrong channel

In 2021, a K-12 school in Iowa replaced all of its high school student computers to give students better user experience. Unfortunately, after the replacement, the computers continuously joined the school’s 2.4GHz channel rather than its 5GHz channel. The school’s older elementary chromebooks joined the 5GHz channel every time without fail.

The school’s District Technology Director started looking for an explanation. It seemed like the problem had to lie with the computers, but the vendor instead suggested that the problem was with the school’s access points dummying down to the slowest item connecting to them.

Wyebot ends finger pointing and discovers root cause

The director used the AI-powered Wireless Intelligence Platform™ (WIP) in combination with the AP’s management platform to prove that the school’s WiFi was the same in both buildings and that the problem was with the difference in chromebooks, not the network.

After a couple of software patches from the vendors, the high school’s computers started connecting to the 5GHz channel. This ended random Google Drive errors and cleaned up loading issues with online textbooks, movie links, and more.

WIP supports teacher experience

“Having Wyebot as another source of visibility and troubleshooting helps exponentially,” said the director.

Sometimes there are unreported issues with Office 365, GSuites, and state EDU sites. With WIP’s automated alerts, the director and his IT team know instantly if the issue is site or network specific. This significantly reduces resolution times.

The director also uses WIP’s scheduled network tests to test the performance of all the common sites and tools used by his teachers. This way, he can see in live time if the network and online tools are available and, in the case of issues, he can see exactly what’s been affected. He can also review historic data from the last day, week, or month when needed.

WIP has become an important time saver and cost reducer, helping to ensure that the school’s network is always reliable.

In this case study, Wyebot’s WIP helps support K-12 teachers by easily finding answers and quickly resolving connectivity problems.

Student Living Impacted by a Building Automation Issue

Imagine a university dorm: multiple floors filled with hallways and rooms, all populated by students who expect the dorm to be comfortable, a true home-away-from-home.

Now, imagine building facilities department outfitting a new dorm with WiFi-enabled thermostats to provide comfort in an energy-efficient way.

Imagine those thermostats randomly, intermittently disconnecting from the WiFi, preventing temperature regulation? Imagine the time it took to manually reconnect the thermostats?

Suffolk University can, as the problem was a real-life issue. It was a problem made more complicated by two additional factors:

  1. COVID protocols limiting when the Network team could be onsite, and
  2. Even without the coronavirus, the Network team couldn’t spend hours or days sitting around dorm rooms, waiting for the issue to reoccur.

Reducing Resolution Times Significantly

After several weeks spent trying to pin down the root cause of the intermittent issue, the Network team decided to work with Wyebot and the remote-capable Wireless Intelligence Platform™ (WIP). A WIP sensor was placed in the dorm and the next time the thermostats disconnected, WIP captured the event in real-time and automatically alerted the Network team.

Just like that, the Network team had the exact data needed to solve the problem. In addition to sending the alert, WIP saved the historical wireless packet trace with the information, allowing them to review it at any time. This wireless packet trace showed the complete communication protocol between the thermostat and the Access Point both, just before the issue and at the time of the issue, with a time-stamp when the disconnect occurred.

Suffolk University’s Network team took that data and shared it with the AP vendor. This was the exact information needed by the vendor to identify the source of the interoperability issue.

“Because we knew WIP was monitoring the network 24/7, and would alert us automatically to any issues and save all the event data, we knew that we could give our time to other critical issues and still have the confidence that the problem was going to be detected and captured. Even without our team being onsite, a resolution became possible,” said Norman Mourtada.

We added the WIP sensor as another platform to capture over the air packet trace in case of intermittent issues.

“The information that was automatically provided was valuable in terms of pin-pointing the thermostat issue.” Wyebot provided a custom build to increase the capturing of the packet trace over 24hrs. This led to a new feature enhancement by Wyebot adding a USB option to extended packet capture trace over a longer period of time.
